Gospel Reflection Ash Wednesday Matthew vi:1-6, xvi-18

The get-go line of the first reading for the season of Lent is in the form of an invitation from God, 'Come dorsum to me with all your heart, fasting, weeping, mourning … plow to the Lord your God again, for he is all tenderness and pity.' We are hearing there the cardinal phone call of Lent. The call involves firstly a recognition that we are sinners, that in various ways nosotros accept turned away from God. It also involves a recognition that the God we accept turned away from is a God of tenderness and compassion who longs for our render. In today'southward 2d reading Saint Paul goes further and reminds us that the God from whom nosotros take turned away has sought us out and continues to seek us out in the person of his Son Jesus. 'For our sake, God make the sinless one into sin, so that in him we might become the goodness of God.' What a powerful argument that is! God sent his Son to get similar us then that we might become similar God. God in his Son journeyed towards our sinful condition and so that we might journey towards God'due south goodness.

T he ashes that nosotros clothing on this twenty-four hours tell the world that nosotros are sinners. Yet, those ashes we received are in the shape of a cross, which proclaims that we believe in a God whose love is stronger than our sin. As Paul declares in his alphabetic character to the Romans, 'God demonstrates his beloved for the states, in that while nosotros however were sinners, Christ died for us.' The iii practices of almsgiving, prayer and fasting that Jesus speaks about in the gospel reading are three traditional ways of responding to God's honey for u.s. in Christ, 3 ways of journeying towards God who has journeyed towards us. They are iii ways of responding to that call of God at the beginning of the outset reading, 'Come back to me with all your middle'. These iii Lenten practices are closely interlinked. Fasting is in the service of prayer and almsgiving. Nosotros die to ourselves and then equally to live more fully towards God and our fellow homo beings.
